Analyzing Trailers

War of the Worlds Teaser Trailer

'The following preview had been approved for all audiences by the motion picture association of         America.' Just before the trailer starts the quote above is warning those of whom is viewing the trailer about the age that is suitable for this clip. This lasts approximately three seconds before the  production companies are displayed , Paramount and Dreamworks last also for the matching time  period. By displaying the production companies they are showing the audiences who they are and the  type of films they produce,  this boost their reputation and is also mainly for copy right purposes.

The voice over appears when a dark screen is shown, this allows the viewers to solely focus on the  voice of the man speaking as he informs the audiences on what is happening within the world he  lives in.  Images of Earth and the life before is shown, cut images move by fast engaging the  audience. Then another black screen appears, the voice over continues to play as images of an before  and after affect. Sound effects appear but are lightly played in the background as the man's voice  talks. Near the end of the teaser trailer the actors names appear alongside instrumental music. Then  title of the film is displayed informing those who want to see the film in cinema, and lastly at the end  of all trailers appears the date to which the film will be released , within this particular trailer the  official date is not mention it simply says. 'This summer' and therefore as its a teaser on the theatrical  trailer the actual date and month will be shown for those who wish to see it.

From the screenshots below it is clear that this genre is Sic-fi/ thriller as there is a shot of Earth as most settings is based in space/ Galaxy. Alongside the typical setting of space there is also average people living among the unknown in their streets, and as shown below there is a clear example of a strange light appearing in the sky which the humans walk out to view. As mentioned before hand the sound effects used are voice overs, the gentlemen's voice explains what has happened to Earth. The characters within this film are a father and a daughter relationship and as always the male tend to be the brave character who is out to protect his daughter. Lastly the camera shoots within this teaser trailer are over the shoulder, mid shoulder shot and even long shot.

An alien invasion breaks out and destroys human kind and this is clear to see as amongst the darkness and the fear of the unknown, in between clips brief sentences inform the audience what the plot of the movie is based upon. UN-like 'War of the Worlds' were there's a voice over the is replace by words, this makes the viewers want to read on, and feel captured by the trailer as the characters are in hiding. Instrumental music plays in background and this seems to be the codes and conventions for Sci-fi genres, no words are hardy used and if so they play softly.

The music helps bring to light the mystery and fear of what is out there. However

However the music does reach a climax as the creature is taking hold of cars and destroying the Earth. Again enhancing the excitement, thriller and uncertainty.

In terms of shots there are full body shots showing the mis en scene allowing the audience to take in the location and get a rough idea of how much the 'UN-invited' creatures have taken over and destroyed Earth. Head shots, over the shoulder shots and close ups even the sound of heavy breathing works collectively well as it creates a sense of panic which is what thriller/Sci-fi is all about.
