film posters

                                    Teaser Poster

Teaser trailers have a aim and a direct focus like most posters however teaser is a clue within the name, it is there to only show some elements of the film,  it is there to create a hype and make the movie become the talk of entertainment. For the viewers the posters allow the audience to know when the film will be released, however not every poster does so- as the teaser posters are often made before the filming is even finished, teaser trailers often give little information about the plot of the movie which enhances the buzz.

As Sci-fi is my genre it was key that I researched into the different designs of this category, and it is clear to see the typical conventions within the layout. Most are very dark creating that mystery feeling, they are hardy any full face shots of the actors within the film only snaps of particular features of their face or body are shown.  Alongside this the actors names do not appear on the front of the poster again building a sense of excitement. The lack of eye contact is not in sight which gives little evidence of what is to come within the movie.

This teaser trailer is much like most typical of this genre, it has the idea of darkness surrounding the actors but with lights shining blocking out the secret, the unknown allows for the viewers to get an idea that the characters are faced with something they are intrigued by. This image shows two young actors, yet their faces are not shown only their backs. The lack of eye contact leaves the audience guessing who is playing within the film.  Excitement builds and word of mouth is created.

The date of Super 8 is not confirmed it simply says 'coming soon', anticipation appears as the production of the movie is still in its early stages. Many fans begin countdowns for the release date and as the film leaves the audience guessing they are more likely going to keep track of the date to which it will be released.

The title is what informs the viewers of the name and its always the largest font on the poster as that is what catches peoples attention. Some titles often give away roughly what the film is likely to be based- however for this poster in particular it does not. What is super? And why the number eight? These questions are asked by the audience making the unknown feel even more mysterious.

Taglines are vital as the two words are simple and affected this reels people in. 'It arrives', it suggest that the genre is Sci-fi and an alien of some kind shall appear, again making the viewers excitement for the film to be released.

                                        Theatrical trailers.

The main poster is the final poster released and upon it there is the release date, this clearly states when the audience  is able to see the film,
One thing that is very common with main posters is that there are more close ups of the characters within the movie allowing for the viewers to be aware of who is in the film. The title is also one of the most important conventions as it informs the name of the film and as the main poster will be used heavy in the promotion it is vital that all the information, dates and the titles are on the poster. Alongside this the name of the main actors within the film have their names displayed mainly above the title, centered in the middle and this often does match the layout of the poster as the main/ popular actors are mainly placed centered in the poster. Like the examples shown above, eye contact is shown creating more of an connection within the audience.

On the main poster reviews and feedback of the film is scatted around the poster, alongside awards. They are normally placed under the title or above informing us the awards they are nominated for which not only creates a hype for the film, but knowing a movie has been nominated is more likely to gain more of  an interest.

The rating of the film is displayed within the small printed writing which tells us the producers, soundtrack, production company and the rating. This informs the viewers what age they are able to see this film.  As the information is one of a small font means that the image is what is the main focus within the poster.

The conventions of  a teaser film posters are.

Tagline: Every  teaser or main poster have a sentence or brief line which gives a idea on the synopsis.
Screen details: As it's teaser trailer there is no set date, but the screen details are always placed at the bottom of the poster.

The director's name is always placed  mainly upon on the top center of the poster, however not ever teaser poster has the director's name displayed as the actors names often are what are seen.

Production logo: This is always placed at the lower half of the poster which informs the viewer of the production company.

Title: The title of the film is not placed in the same place for every teaser, it changes and as seen within this teaser poster the title falls downwards which works affectedly as it suggest that a creature has/ will fall from space.

Image: The image of the poster of a teaser is normally not a close up of the actors, but distance shots of their full body shaded out which again adds mystery. The sky,/ stars are mainly seen within the genre of Sci-fi which again clearly informs the audience what category the film is. In the genre of Sci-fi the iconography is mainly, darkness, the view of the sky, spaceships and supernatural events taking place.

Date: With every teaser poster 'coming soon' or 'this fall' is always paced at the bottom of the poster, like seen in the Interstellar.

Main image:  Again like most teaser posters the main image does not give away the whole plot of the film, for example the Maze Runner poster clearly states and tells the viewer that it's based on a maze, but yet leaves the audience questioning more which creates a hype. However as this movie is based on a novel those who have read the story knows what to expect and this is cross media and it publicizes both the novel as well as the film.  As there are two boys running links nicely with the title showing that they are the runners within the maze.

Colour scheme: The dark natural green tones adds to the element of mystery, the darkness through the cracked open walls creates an atmosphere of the unknown  which is very common within the genre of sci-fi. The white/ grey writing stands out however also matches the shade of the maze walls, this adds a sense of uniform and gives a professional final touch to the poster.

Date: 'Coming soon' is placed at the bottom of the poster like most teaser posters which builds excitement for the fans.

Tagline: Some teaser trailers have a tagline which gives a small clue to what the movie could potentially be based on, however this poster does not have one which adds even more curiosity.

Website: Facebook page is placed at the bottom of the poster which allows fans to check new updates and press releases of the actors further on in the production of the film, it also gives hints and clues to when the movie will be released.

Institutions: The institution logo is planted last underneath the website and title itself, by displaying the logo shows what institute supports the film.

After the research I have under taken I shall be doing a teaser poster as I will be making a teaser trailer I feel it not only fits well together as its at the same stage of the production, but also I like the idea of not giving away too much, as my genre is Sci-fi mystery is what I aim to achieve therefore I have come to a final decision of making a teaser poster.
