Once I was aware and certain of the type of genre I was going to film it was vital that I researched in depth the codes and conventions of both the genre types I chose. Thriller and Sci- fi were the two genres that interested me the most, therefore by ensuring that I simply watched more than one trailer of this type of film would allow me to understand why that movie was labeled sic- fi/ thriller.
Sci-fi
From the likes of 'Super 8', 'Monsters' and 'Aliens' it is evident that Sci- fi trailers consists of the common quotes as, "find this thing"- "I saw it" to "something moving". This clearly states that we never really see what is out there, the characters within the trailer never know what the creature is. Much like in Aliens the 1979 version we the audience see moments of the alien, however only body parts of the creature, (never the full face of the alien). This gives us the perfect cliff hanger and the curious thought of wondering, it reels us in and makes the viewers and potential fans want to go to the cinema as soon as it is released. The fear of the unknown and like always there is that one character that has the urge to discover what the creature really is. This then normally leads them to being apart of explosions, taking lead and finding out the unexplained events that happen. Most of the locations are in hiding or outside where the supernatural events take place.
Sci fi and it's sub genres
- First contact
- Apocalyptic, holocaust, and post-apocalyptic
- Hard science fiction
- Time travel
- Cross-genre
- Cyberpunk
- Science fantasy/future fantasy
- Soft/sociological science fiction
- humorous science fiction
- Space opera
- Near-future science fiction
- Slipstream
When watching the Sci fi trailers I discovered a range of codes and conventions through out the many teaser trailers I have seen. There is special effects, futuristic, conflict between bad and evil/ aliens and Earth as we know but with uninvited creatures.
Thriller
Thriller is not a type of horror though can have elements like 'Cabin in the woods', which clearly it's known for its action packed plots and fight scenes with elements of dark moments where the protagonists is faced with torment for is being followed. Much like 'Bourne Identity' and 'The Dark knight Rises', these type of movies display scenes of darkness, good vs evil, plots which are fast paced. Thriller is a genre that is often real life based, yet can be futuristic which is why it works with Sci-fi so well. Action thriller based films makes us want to be part of the action, cheer on the good guy and watch as the bad guy falls to defeat. And lastly thriller is not a thriller within guns and high end weaponry as in most of this categorized genre there fight scenes are the anticipated moments that make or break the the appeal within the trailer/ movie.Thriller and it's sub genres
- Romantic Thriller
- Supernatural Thriller
- Psychological Thriller
- Mystery Thriller
- Crime Thriller
- Action Thriller
- Techno-Thriller
When watching the thriller trailers I discovered many codes and conventions that run thought out this type of genre and they are, tension music, protagonist fighting against the antagonist, quick cuts and the main character will always have his identity hidden in order for the audience to seen the character development and the progression of the movie. Most of the locations for this genre is, cites- outside mainly especially for car scenes. I find that the aim of thriller is to make the audience think that it can happen to them, this creates the feeling of fear.
Both Sci-fi and Thriller excite me as they allow us to enter a world like no other, it captures my attention and leaves me hanging there till I discover what the creatures, are and why there seek to destroy Earth. Alongside the action and thriller of the unknown it makes me want to create and build upon the layers of other classic movies and make others want to enjoy this genre as much as I myself does.
