Analysis of films magazines

                       Film Magazine Research
There are a huge range of conventions within film magazines that are the same, however with technology improving software has only made the quality of the magazine advanced and even more enjoyable for the public to read and collect.
Here below are some magazine that I have researched and studied the conventions within most of them.

The main image is something that every magazine has, its a vital conventions for magazines and brings to light without even reading the magazine who and what the topics will be based on. As Johnny depp is hugely successful and an well known actor it not only ensure fans of his will buy the magazine, but by having him as a representative means that Entertainment weekly gain even more of a reputation. What is very common with the film magazines industry is that most of the actors are dressed as the character that they are playing, by the likes Johnny he his dressed as Sweeney Tod, this allows the audience to see him visually and the features of the character, even a seek peek of what type of character he shall be playing.

The colour scheme is never the same, its rather unique to the simple fact that each issued magazine changes depending on the film. As above it is clear that the colour scheme is of darker shade, grey- white and black creates a sinister untrustworthy feel to Johnny's character. The Blue title is one of the only colours giving it a striking affect, much like the hints of red too. The colours are used to complement that photo itself, and with the use of light blue and white highlights the important features of the magazine.

The masthead is one that is memorable as the word 'weekly' is planted inside the title 'Entertainment' this makes the title alone stand out compared to other magazines as its original. Alongside the font itself the blues, reds and whites has a purpose to ensure that the writing has the readers attention such as much as the image does.

The cover line is large and eye catching as Johnny Depp is written in a fresh white coat against the darkness of his jacket. The font is on the larger scale compared to the rest of the font yet is placed just under his chin which makes its clear, easy on the eye and informs the readers on the topic based in the magazine.

There are many magazines that have puffs, free give ways reeling the potential buyer to buy the magazine, however this magazine is rather different, there are no puffs.

 Iron man cover

The main image of Iron man a fan not everyone is aware of the character and that he is apart of Marvel. As the image is focused on Robert Downey it makes it personal, especially the eye contact.  Iron man has taken off his mask and this again is a given away as the magazine is focused on 'Iron man three' we as the audiences already know who plays the character- this is a great image as it excites those who have come to love Iron Man and Robert Downey himself.

Within this issued magazine there is a strapeline which is placed above the title. This highlights the key topics that are based within the magazine. 'Star wars' this is clearly for all fans of that fandom.

The colour scheme on this cover is yet again like most magazine works in partnership, the red font bond eye catching which highlights what will be inside the magazine. As Iron man has a red/gold suit the sky background makes the audience feel that Iron man 3 is reaching new heights.

Just above the Letter M there is the date, issue number and price this informs the potential buyer what issue this magazine is and most importantly the price of the magazine.

The cover-lines use drawing words that make the reader wish to read on, such as 'Plus' this tells the reader what other articles is in the magazine which helps the reader known if they wish to buy/read on.

'Original avenger' is a promotional puff as the colour is one of a darker shade compared to the other cover-lines it draws in peoples attention and stands out even though its font is one of not a larger size.

The masthead is is capitals with a fresh coat of white, against the sky background becomes bond and works alongside the colour scheme. this makes it easy to read and as Robert Downey is placed in front of the master head is it clear that the magazine brand has a huge brand awareness, many people are fans of the magazine itself therefore it is obvious to what the Master head is called.

Empire change the layout of their magazine as seen, the Tom cruise addition is slightly different as there is a film strip which has a aim  to neatly display each article within the magazine, this not only attracts peoples attention but it has a unique layout to the magazine front cover making it clear to what type of genre the magazine is.

The colour theme: The most noticeable tone on the front cover is red, it suggest danger as well as love as Tom Cruise is a famous actor and is loved by many men and women. The use of red  draws potential readers/buyers to read on. As his clothing is one of a darker blue his name stands out and matches with the film reel placed on the front. The background of the magazine is smartly created based around the theme of the twenty fifth birthday issue, therefore by showing past magazines that Empire have produced shows just how successful they really are.

The master head like Entertainment weekly has the word 'total' embedded with with the headmaster. As the font is a striking white which works well as Thor is the God of thunder the master head is hard not to miss. Again like Empire, film is a well known magazine brand therefore by having Chris Hemsworth in front of the master head does not effect the audience from reading the master head.

The puff is bright yellow and normally is a shape of a triangle, this works in juxtaposes the cover lines surrounding the main image as they are red or white. Therefore with the puff being one of a brighter colour allows it to catch peoples attention making it the focus.

Bar-code informs the reader on how much the magazine, and as the bar-code is very important  hence why it is placed in the far corner of the magazine- it is easy to find.

There again is a starpeline placed above the the Master head which displays that it is 'The Marvel Movie issue.'For those who are a fans of Marvel would be too pleased as this magazine is based marvel only therefore those who do not like marvel as much informs them before reading on.

Cover-lines placed on either side of the magazine making it not only easy to read, but gives a professional image for the magazine. The white writing links nicely with the white master-head which really brings to light the theme of Thor being the God of thunder.

There are a variety of film magazines that are hugely popular within the magazine industry, here are just some of the most successful magazines.

  • Empire
  • Total Film
  • Entertainment
  • FHM
Empire is one of the biggest film magazines and was first published in Australia in the year of 2001. The core target for this magazine is men aged between 18-45, and is a monthly magazine it has a rough price range of £5.00 and upwards.

Total Film is based in the UK and was first published in 1997. Much like Empire it is published monthly releasing the latest films and interviews, The price range for Total film magazine is £5.99 and has a target audience for men and women at the age range of 18-35, however 75% of those who buy this magazine are male.

Entertainment weekly is a magazine company that is based in New York, first being published in 1990 and releases the magazine weekly hence the name, this is different compared to Empire and Total Film as they are monthly rather than weekly. More women purchase Entertainment weekly rather than men, this could suggest that the articles and the cover design is more appealing and approachable for females.

FHM magazine compared to the other magazine is the longest running at it was first published in 1985, it is also based in the UK and releases monthly magazines at the price range of £3.99. Again like Total Film and Empire the main target audience is men.

Comparing the magazines the trends that I have often notice is that the range pricing for a magazine is based around the pricing of £5-£6.
